  • Introduction

    Growth of water natural resources utilization and discharge of the untreated effluents intensifies the global water crisis. Finding an efficient and applicable approach to treat the contaminated water is one of the solutions which can prevent the pollution of available water resources and provide a new supply of treated water for industrial and agricultural purposes. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a set of chemical processes with the ability of degradation of pollutants based on the reactive oxygen species involvement. Hydroxyl radical as one of the most powerful oxidants has a key role in this category of chemical reactions. High oxidative efficiency of AOPs, reducing the pollutant concentrations from several-hundred ppm to about 1 ppb, makes them the interesting techniques in the treatment of the most recalcitrant organic and inorganic contaminants.
    In this special issue, the articles entitled “Advanced Oxidation Processes for the Treatment of Micro-Pollutants in Water and Wastewater” cover topics related to the degradation of organic pollutants, toxins, pesticides, herbicides, surface-active substances, pharmaceuticals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and endocrine disruptors in several matrices including surface and groundwater, urban, agricultural, and industrial wastewaters, air, and soil. Preferred methods are recommended to be Fenton, Fenton-like, electro-Fenton, photo-Fenton, catalytic wet peroxide oxidation, heterogeneous photocatalysis, catalytic ozonation, electrochemical oxidation, sonochemical oxidation, activated persulfate assisted oxidation process, and various combinations of the mentioned techniques. Emphasis is given on the synthesis, characterization, and test of new catalysts in AOPs. The mechanistic and kinetic studies to achieve a deep knowledge of under probe processes are in priority. The other topics such as photocatalytic or electrocatalytic water splitting, process modeling, soil contamination removal, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NOx elimination, and CO2 reduction are acceptable.

    Manuscripts can be submitted until the expiry of the deadline. Submissions must be previously unpublished and may not be under consideration elsewhere.
